The Green Team

A Rainy Earth Day

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - A diverse group of volunteers braved the downpours, mud and wind to plant 78 tree seedlings on Saturday’s celebration of Earth Day in the Park. The trees were planted on the banks of the Minebank Run, on the Sherwood side of the Park. The trees supplement and extend the riparian buffer to prevent erosion and provide shade over the stream to keep the water cool for the wildlife species that live there and for those who frequent its banks.

Volunteers came from the Cromwell Valley Park Council, the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, the Habitat Restoration Team, the Girls Scouts, Towson University and the community to learn about the importance of trees to the environment and how to plant for maximum survival. The tree planting was made possible with a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust and was organized by Peggy Perry, Director of Education and Restoration with the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy.

The Green Team is very grateful to everyone who came out to the Park and gave their time, energy and good natures to make Earth Day a spring success.

Save the Date!

On Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 5 PM to 9 PM, the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, in conjunction with the Cromwell Valley Park Council, will host an “Evening in the Park” to celebrate their annual birthday party. They will be honoring the contributions of their volunteers and donors. The event will be held on the lawn at the Sherwood House. Further details will be available soon. Contact Pat Novak at Pnovak8525@aol.com, or 410.592.2977, if you are interested in helping plan this awesome event. The rain date will be Saturday, September 24th.

The Green Team is in search of people who are interested in becoming members, as well as those who would like to help with grant writing. Contact the Park Office at 410.887.2503 if you are interested in helping our environmental mission.
